The Simplon eagle as a landmark
As a symbol of vigilance on the Simplon, the eagle stands as a soldier’s monument on the Simplon Pass. The following inscription is on the pedestal:
«IN DER FREIHEIT DER BERGE STEHT ES, EIN WUCHTIGES MAL AUS HARTEM GRANIT: EIN GEDENKEN TREUER PFLICHTERFÜLLUNG, EIN DAUERNDES MAHNEN, WILLIG UND WACH ZU SEIN FÜR UNSERE FREIHEIT.»
Which freely translated means the following:
“In the freedom of the mountains it stands, a massive mark of hard granite: a memorial of faithful fulfilment of duty, a constant reminder to be willing and awake for our freedom.”
In 2019, the Adler celebrated its 75th anniversary. To be able to show itself from its best and most beautiful side, it was extensively renovated in autumn 2018.
